Alan B. Douglass, MD, FACE, FACP
A native of California, Dr. Douglass earned his medical degree in 1991 from the University of Southern California School of Medicine. After graduating from medical school, Dr. Douglass was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy. He completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Naval Medical Center San Diego, and later completed subspecialty fellowship training in Endocrinology Diabetes and Metabolism at National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. He returned to Naval Medical Center San Diego in 2001, and served as attending staff, teaching residents, interns and medical students. He retired from the U.S. Navy in 2013 with the rank of Captain after serving over 22 years.
Dr. Douglass previously served as Head of the Internal Medicine Division and Head of the Endocrinology Division at Naval Medical Center San Diego. He was Chair of the Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery's Diabetes Working Group, working to improve the care of diabetes in Navy medicine worldwide. He was a member of the expert panel that developed the current Veterans Affairs/Department of Defense Clinical Practice Guideline for the care of diabetes mellitus.
Dr. Douglass is a Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. He is also a member of the Endocrine Society. Dr. Douglass is board certified in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism and in Internal Medicine. He has interests in all fields of Endocrinology, in particular thyroid disease, diabetes, and pituitary disease. He strives to help all of his patients be active participants in their treatment, ensuring they understand their treatment options and assisting them in making good health care and lifestyle decisions.
Dr. Douglass is married and has two sons. He enjoys spending time with his family, relaxing in beautiful sunny San Diego, and watching the Padres and Chargers win.
